Dr Ruth Pfao Gets Tribute on Google

Google is paying tribute to renowned German doctor Dr Ruth Pfau on her 90th birthday, who dedicated her life to eradicate leprosy from Pakistan.

Google honours prominent personalities and occasions with special logos that it calls 'doodles'. In the past, the giant search engine paid tribute to Pakistan’s prominent personalities, Abdul Sattar Edhi, Noor Jahan (Malika e Taranum), Mirza Ghalib, Mehdi Hassan, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali khan and other renowned personalities. Google has also been showing Pakistan's Independence Day and other events of national importance on Doodle.

A symbol of selflessness Dr.Ruth Katherina Martha Pfau called as Pakistan’s ‘Mother Teresa’. She first came to Pakistan at the age of 29 in 1960, there she witnessed leprosy for the first time and returned to set up clinics across the country. It was her dream to make Pakistan free from this menace, she wanted to get rid of it as soon as possible; so to achieve this long chasing goal, she burnt midnight oil, worked day and night. 
Dr Pfau rescued many Pakistanis from this contagious disease which isolated the affected patients, it causes deformity and disfigurement of the skin. She trained Pakistani doctors and attracted foreign donations as well, founding Pakistan's National Leprosy Control Program and the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Center, which have been providing services in all provinces of the country.

She received numerous honors for her work, including the Hilal-e-Imtiaz - Pakistan's second highest civilian award - she received  in 1979, the Hilal-e-Pakistan in 1989 and the German Staufer Medal in 2015. Governor State Bank of Pakistan had unveiled Rs 50 commemorative coin in recognition of her unmatched services, Pakistan Air Force named their Medical College as " Fazaia Ruth Pfau Medical College" and Sindh Government renamed Karachi Civil Hospital in her name.

Dr Ruth devoted precious years of her life to fighting Leprosy in Pakistan, treated 56780 patients. In 1979, Government of Pakistan, appointed her as an Advisor on Leprosy in Ministry of Health, she felt honored to get a portfolio in Pakistan; in recognition of her performance and services in this field, she was also awarded Pakistani citizenship in 1988.

Dr Ruth Pfau, due to continuous hard-work, had serious health issues like Kidney and heart disease, she was getting treatment for years but on August 4, 2017, she was admitted to Aga khan University Hospital Karachi owing to respiratory irregularity, and died on August 10, 2017.

Pakistan nation will remain indebted to her for her dedicated services to humanity, she was honored with state funeral held at Saint Patrick's Cathedral Karachi, where flag of Pakistan remained half mast.
