Director-General WHO Remarks on COVID-19:
On October 12, 2020, the Director-General World Health Organization said in opening remarks at the media briefing on COVID-19, that “Around the world, we’re now seeing an increase in the number of reported cases of COVID-19, especially in Europe and the Americas. There has been some discussion recently about the concept of reaching so-called ‘herd immunity’ by letting the virus spread. Never in the history of public health has herd immunity been used as a strategy for responding to the outbreak of a pandemic, let alone a pandemic”.
Defining Herd Immunity, he said Herd immunity is a concept used for vaccination, in which a populace can be protected from a certain virus after a threshold of vaccination is successfully reached. He gave its example that herd immunity against measles requires about 95% of a population to be vaccinated and the remaining 5% will be protected by the fact that the epidemic will not spread among those who are vaccinated. He told the threshold of polio, about 80%. He explained that herd immunity is achieved by protecting people from a virus, not by exposing them to it.
The WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus who is an Ethiopian biologist, public health researcher, and the first non-physician and first African in this role; has said that the vast majority of people in most of the countries remain susceptible to this virus. Seroprevalence surveys suggest that in most of the countries, less than 10% of the population have been infected with the COVID-19 virus.
Dr. Tedros, further stated that precautionary and protective measures are unavoidable for any society. He said it’s not a choice between letting the virus be free and shutting down the societies. “This virus transmits mainly between close contacts and causes spreading that can be controlled by implementing timely targeted measures, like preventing events that increase the outbreak, protect the vulnerable people of our society, empowering, educating and engaging the communities and finally continue with the same tools that we have been promoting since day one that finds the infected ones, isolate and test them, provide them care, and trace and quarantine their contacts.
Over a week ago, Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan said in a tweet that Pakistan has been lucky enough as compared to many other countries concerning damage caused by Coronavirus. He said Allah has been kind to us and we have been spared from the worst effects of COVID-19. But he expressed a fear of a resurgence of the pandemic in on-setting of the winter, he called it a second wave. Prime minister urged the nation to wear masks and avoid spreading the pandemic, “All offices and educational institutions must ensure masks are worn,” he stressed at the end of his tweet.
Some countries are taking innovative measures to take control of the COVID-19 pandemic; different types of Apps have been developed by these countries to trace the contacts and extend COVID-19 related facilities to the people. WHO is also working with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control to help countries evaluate the effectiveness of their digital contact tracing Apps.
Preparation of Vaccine:
To make COVID-19 a vaccine-preventable disease, vaccine preparation work is ongoing in some countries, presently there are more than 100 vaccine preparation candidates, some of them are said to be in the Human-testing phase. WHO is also working in collaboration with scientists, businesses, and various global health organizations through the “ACT Accelerator Collaboration Program” to speed up the pandemic response. WHO says that after a safe and effective vaccine is found, COVAX (led by WHO, GAVI, and Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations) will facilitate the unbiased access and distribution of these vaccines to protect people in all countries, People at most risk will be prioritized.
