UAE-Israel Peace Deal
UAE-Israel Peace Deal

On last Thursday, peace deal between UAE and Israel was announced in Washington DC by US president Donald Trump. For some, it may be a surprise but the fact is that efforts for normalization of ties between two countries were being taken for some years. They were already having good working relations in business, technology, and intelligence sharing. UAE becomes the 3rd Arab country after Egypt and Jordan to sign such agreement.
On August 13, 2020, US president Donald Trump formally announced UAE-Israel Peace Agreement at the White House USA. Israel and US had issued a joint statement that according to the agreement, Israel and the UAE will share embassies and begin a new era of cooperation in the fields of education, healthcare, trade, security and tourism. On other hand, UAE says it does not intend to open embassy in Jerusalem until there is a settlement between Palestine and Israel.
The three partakers of this deal –UAE, Israel and USA– call it a historic move towards peace in the Middle East. United Arab Emirates also calls it as an attempt to stop Israel annexing Palestinian territories of West Gaza but Israeli prime minister made it clear that there will be no any change in his plan for extending territory.
As a result of the peace deal with Israel, reportedly, UAE may get American F-35 fighter jets, advanced drones and other weaponries in the future; such a deal is going to be signed between UAE and the US. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, on the contrary, said in a statement, that Israel had not given any consent over the arms deal between UAE and US. Israeli defense minister Benny Gentz also said Israel will not take any security risk by compromising its security responsibility.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, in an interview with Sky News Arabia, said although the United Arab Emirates is a hereditary monarchy which does not allow establishment of political parties, yet it is an “advanced democracy.” The statement indicates that Israel wants to change hereditary monarchy in United Arab Emirates into democracy. Sources say that Prime Minister Netanyahu tweeted about his statement of UAE’s democracy, which he removed straight away. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is hopeful for more Arab countries to follow UAE’s move.
Palestinian president Mahmood Abbas expressed his anger over the Abraham Accord and said “we are not afraid of nonsense that happen here and there especially in the recent days, when a trilateral agreement among UAE, Israel and US was announced. It is a stab in the back.” Palestine also called a meeting of Arab League in this regard.
Hamas gave its strong reaction saying "This agreement does absolutely not serve the Palestinian cause, it rather serves the Zionist narrative. This agreement encourages the occupation to continue its denial of the rights of our Palestinian people, and even to continue its crimes against our people,"
David Ilhayani, head of the Israeli Settler Group Yesha, has expressed his resentment over the UAE-Israel Deal and said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has turned away from his promise to annex West Gaza, and that he deceived about half a million residents of the area.
Iranian president Hassan Rouhani said that the deal was a betrayal to Palestine cause and it was a big mistake of UAE. Iranian foreign ministry said the oppressed people of Palestine and all the free nations of the world will never forgive the normalization of relations with the criminal Israeli occupation regime and the involvement in its crimes, the ministry called the deal a strategic stupidity."
Turkey threatens to suspend ties with United Arab Emirates over the Peace Deal between UAE and Israel and call back their envoy. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told his foreign minister that Turkey should either suspend ties with the government of United Arab Emirates or call back country’s Ambassador. Foreign minister of Turkey said that "History and the conscience of the region's people will not forget and never forgive this hypocritical behaviour of the UAE, betraying the Palestinian cause for the sake of its narrow interests."
Pakistan also has a very clear stance over this deal. Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has said during an interview with a local Television that “Our stance is very clear; as Quaid-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had said, Pakistan will never recognize Israel until the Palestinians are given their right of just settlement with a separate country for them.” Imran khan also tweeted this statement on his official twitter account. He further said “Palestinian cause is the same like Kashmir Issue, if Pakistan today recognizes Israel then we will have to give up Kashmir as well; so it is not possible for us to recognize Israel anyway. Palestinian Embassy in Islamabad thanked Imran Khan for such a bold and upfront stance over the UAE-Israel deal.
Pakistan foreign ministry official statement said the US-brokered peace deal between United Arab Emirates and Israel could have far-reaching implications but Pakistan’s approach will be based on how Palestinians rights are maintained. Peace and stability in the region are Pakistan’s key priorities.
Saudi Arabia clearly said that it would not follow United Arab Emirates in establishing ties with Israel until a peace accord between Palestine and Israel is signed.
Bahrain and Oman congratulated United Arab Emirates on the Peace deal for normalization of the ties. Palestinians were demanding from secretary general of the Arab League either to denounce the deal or resign from the position.
Israel seems to expect more members of the Gulf States to sign such deals for normalization of ties in the future, Bahrain may be the next, and Oman can also follow the path after United Arab Emirates or perhaps Bahrain. Probably a new world order is going to be implemented which apparently gets started from the Middle-East but will the UAE be able to get the F-35 fighter Jets and other advanced weaponry from America in return or will the deal be mere an attempt for UAE to gain commercial and security benefits from Israel, it is a big question which may be answered by the upcoming times.
