The International Cat Association (TICA) has recognized seventy-one standardized breeds, Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) recognizes forty-four breeds and the Federation of Internationale Feline (FIFE) recognizes forty-three cat breeds. • Abyssinian Cats:

The Abyssinian cats are generally found in Asian and African countries, originated in Ethiopia, a country of East Africa. These cats are well known for their playfulness, curiosity, and love to explore their surroundings; Abyssinians are regal-looking cats who like to participate in the activities taking place around them, they often follow their owners. Abyssinian cats are short-haired, they are also called Abys. They are regarded as the “Clowns of the cat kingdom”, they can live up to 15 years or even more.

• Sphynx Cats:

They are hairless, and the hairlessness in cats’ breed is a natural process of genetic mutation. These cats are wrinkled-looking, they are one of the newest cat breeds and they are indoor pets. Because their skin is exposed, they can’t live outside permanently or too long. They are playful and very energetic, though Sphynx cats are not aggressive, they get aggressive only if they are provoked. The demand of Sphynx cats is quite high, this type of cats is also very expensive. The lifespan of the Sphynx breed ranges from eight to fourteen years.

• Ragdoll Cats:

These cats were developed by American breeder Ann Baker in the 1960s, they are best known for their obedient and placid temperament and affectionate nature, and they have a beautiful soft coat. Ragdolls are large, they easily learn things and are devoted to their owners almost like the dogs. Most of the time they remain quiet and rarely meow. Ragdolls may feel lonely and depressed if left alone for too long.

• Maine Coon Cats:

This is the largest domesticated cat breed, it is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. This breed is native to the US state of Maine, where it is the official state cat. Maine Coons are very affectionate and have excellent hunting skills, they are active mousers also. They don’t have a problem living outdoors or indoors, these cats are considered strong and powerful. Maine Coons aren’t usually scared of water like most other cats, the interesting thing is their fur is also water-resistant, they can swim effortlessly in deep water.

• Persian Cats:

Persian cats originated in Iran, in 1620, they were imported into Italy. Persian cats are sweet and gentle, they were recognized by cat-lovers in the 19th century. They are known for their quiet nature and are said to be one of the calmest cat breeds. They are affectionate but they only express love to the people they trust, this breed is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cat breeds. They are long-haired and also shed a lot of hair, people in English-speaking countries call this cat breed “Persian longhair”. Persian cats need to be combed or brushed regularly to avoid matted fur.
