Poliomyelitis (Polio) is a highly infectious viral disease, caused by the Polio Virus, which causes paralysis after attacking the nervous system. Its main victims are children whose immune system is comparatively weaker than adults. It spreads in areas with poor sanitation through faeces into the water supply or coming in contact with the polio-affected persons. It can only be prevented and eradicated by immunization which is consistently carried out throughout the world.

Pakistan has achieved a good deal of success in the polio eradication campaign since its Eradication Program started in 1994, but the massive decline in polio cases started to be reported in the year 2000. Furthermore, in 2018, the Pakistan Govt formulated the National Emergency Action Plan (NEAP) to outline future Polio eradication program.
Sindh Government, in this field, has performed remarkably by mobilizing maximum main power in cities as well as in remote rural areas, for this purpose. The last polio case in Sindh was also eliminated successfully in 2018 but unfortunately, some cases again emerged in some areas. A new trend of administering the vaccine at Bus Stops, Railway Stations and other public places, also came under observation, health workers are performing their job well everywhere.
Polio Immunization Teams kept facing resistance in different cities of Sindh, Hyderabad is the latest case where around 1426 children couldn't be given anti-polio drops due to Parents' refusal. CM Sindh has taken notice of that resistance; strict legal action has been ordered to deal with such Parents. Regarding the issue, many parents were detained by local Police who were then released after their assurance submitted in written form.
This success was achieved through multiple enhancements to the programme over the years, such as:
Highest commitment from the Government,

High-quality vaccination campaigns that reach the most vulnerable Population boosting their immunity;
Operational approach as per the creation of Emergency Operation Centres.

Syed Murad Ali Shah (Chief Minister Sindh) once in a meeting of Sindh Task Force, directed the chief secretary to add a column about the performance of Polio eradication campaign in ACRs of Dist Commissioners so that it is ensured that all Deputy Commissioners are taking a necessary interest in anti-polio Drive.

It would not have been possible to reduce the polio cases without such intensive Polio Drive. Besides, there is a positive role of Paediatricians and religious scholars as well, to persuade and make the people understand the importance of Polio vaccination.
